BLACK+DECKER Countertop Convection Toaster Oven CTO6335S

If your traditional kitchen oven is taking too long to heat up, and you’re ultimately spending more time in the kitchen than you want to be, our reviews may contain the answer you’re looking for. The Black + Decker Counter Convection Toaster Oven CTO6335S is quick, simple and easy to use – and most of all, it’s incredibly affordable.

You can do so much more than just make lots of tasty toast in the Black + Decker CTO6335S. From baking cookies to roasting a chicken – everything you cook in your oven, you can cook in this compact toaster oven. And it can be done at the touch of the button. We’ll cover all its best and worst features and give you an honest review.

Convection Baking

Whatever you want to cook in your toaster oven, a fast, even bake is vital to creating scrumptious food. That’s why it’s vital you choose a toaster oven with convection technology. The Black + Decker CTO6335S model has been built with a convection heating fan.

This circulates warm air throughout the oven with an internal fan to ensure that heat is distributed evenly and your food is cooked thoroughly. When using the unit, this feature is activated while using the ‘BAKE’ function. The fan is quiet when in use, and as this product has been designed with two positions for the slide rack, it offers even better cooking flexibility.

Toaster Functions

If making a variety of dishes is your priority, it’s best to invest in a toaster oven with lots of functions. The Black + Decker CTO6335S features eight toaster functions, including:
– Bake
– Broil
– Toast
– Bagel
– Pizza
– Frozen snacks
– Potatoes
– Cookies

These functions are incredibly easy to use. For example, if you wanted to bake some cookies, all you need to do is press the ‘COOKIES’ button. The digital screen will display ‘PREHEAT’ until the oven reaches 150 degrees Fahrenheit. When the correct temperature is reached, the cooking cycle will begin (for cookies this is 12 minutes). After the cooking cycle is complete, the unit will beep three times and cooking will end.

Toast Darkness Adjustment Setting
The Toast function also has a darkness adjustment setting, so you can choose how lightly or darkly toasted your bagels and toast are! 1 is the lightest and 7 is the darkest. It may take a few tries before you find the ideal setting for your toast.

Once you have found the darkness setting that’s right for you, the toaster oven will remember this so you don’t have to keep resetting it. This will only change if you unplug the machine and it will go back to its default settings.

Digital Controls
It also features digital controls for time and temperature, which are clearly displayed on its digital screen. These features are particularly helpful when the preset functions aren’t exactly the time and/or temperature needed to cook food – and it’s easy to change, too. Simply press the required cooking function and immediately press the arrow buttons to decrease or increase temperature. The time can be changed by pressing the ‘TIMER’ button to increase by one minute, or pressing and holding to increase by 10 minutes.

It’s also important to note that although the CTO6335S fits up to six pieces of bread, I have found that the ‘TOASTER’ function takes a little longer than an actual toaster. However, as this unit has a lot more functions than your average toaster, it’s still a great investment.

Although the toaster’s functions are clearly marked above each button, the words often rub off. This means that after lots of use, it’s not as easy to identify each button and function. One solution would be to simply keep the manufacturer’s manual after purchase for reference, as it clearly indicates all buttons and functions.

Safety Auto-off Feature
This unit has a 120-minute timer which automatically turns off when the timer runs out, which is a great safety feature.

What can be cooked in the CTO6335S?

The most important question – how much food can you cook in this toaster oven? Well, although this Black + Decker toaster oven is small, light, and portable, its unique design means you can fit in a whole lot more food than you think.

Its extra-deep, curved interior means you can fit:

– 6 slices of bread of bread
– 6 hamburger patties
– a 12-inch pizza, or
– a whole chicken

Due to the heating elements at the bottom of the interior, it’s not possible to cook without using the rack.

Heating Elements
4 heating elements

The four elements provide better interior heating and even cooking. Plus, the elements have shields on them to protect from cracks, breaks, and food falling on them.

Interior Light
There is no interior light, making it difficult to see your food while it cooks. However, the oven’s door is made out of glass, so you will still be able to keep an eye on your food while it cooks.

Door and Racks
Unlike other models, the door has no lock function to help it open more gently. This means, if you do not hold the door and gently bring it down until it rests on your counter, it will slam down. It’s also very important to use oven mitts when opening the door as it gets very hot while in use.

There is also no auto-eject rack. This means you will have to pull the racks out of the toaster oven yourself when your food is ready. And, because there is no stopping mechanism on the racks, if you pull the racks out too far, they may fall out.

LCD Display
The LCD display shows the cooking time and temperature, selected cooking function, convection, and toast darkness. This is great for ensuring you’re choosing the right cooking function, as well as to keep an eye on your food. However, it is not backlit, so it may be hard to see if it is dark in your kitchen.

For safety, this product has been created with a grounded plug that will only fit into a three-prong outlet.

Is the BLACK+DECKER CTO6335S easy to clean?

In general, toaster ovens are quick and easy to use; however, they do need to be cleaned more often than a conventional oven. Because of this, it’s ideal you choose a unit that’s easy to clean.

The Black + Decker CTO6335S is made out of stainless steel, so it is resistant to corrosion. It also comes with a crumb tray which is removable from the outside. The placement of the crumb tray means not only is it easier to remove, but crumbs will not drop down into the bottom of the unit.

However, during my research, I have discovered some users have found crumbs will fall into the heating element which is placed under the slide rack. The manufacturer’s manual does not outline how to remove or clean this part, but it does say that any food that comes into contact with the elements will burn off on its own.

How to care for your toaster oven is outlined in the manufacturer’s manual, where it says that the slide rack, bake pan, broil rack and pizza pan can be washed in warm, sudsy water or in the dishwasher. Unfortunately, I have found that the dishwasher takes some of the coating off the pans, so it’s best to hand wash these components.

Temperature Range

Because this model has a wide variety of toaster functions, you can create lots of tasty dishes for you and your family. Whether you’re baking, toasting or roasting, this unit heats up to a temperature of 450°F and reaches 500°F for Broil.

The CTO6335S model heats up in a matter of minutes, and signals when it has reached your preferred temperature. However, it’s important to note that the outer surfaces – including the buttons – become very hot. For this reason, the manufacturer warns to always use oven mitts or pot holders when touching any outer or inner surface of the oven when in use.

A handy function I have found is that this toaster oven can be programmed to measure the temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit, and it will remember your preference of measuring unit until it is unplugged.

It’s also important to note that during the preheat cycle you cannot change the temperature or time. You must wait until the set temperature is reached, then you can adjust the temperature or time accordingly. Again, this toaster oven will remember your temperature preference until it is unplugged.

Plus, in the manufacturer’s manual, you’ll find lots of guidelines for cooking times and temperatures, as well as some delicious recipes to try, to help you cook the perfect meal in your new toaster oven.

Amazon’s dimensions are actually the dimensions of the box the toaster oven is in: 22.8 x 13.4 x 15.5 inches (L x W x H)

Outside of the box, the length is approximately 19”, and the inside dimensions are approximately 14” x 11” x 5.25”.

I am currently still waiting to hear back from Black + Decker about the exact dimensions. When I have this information, I’ll update the review accordingly.

15.8 pounds

This toaster oven is a little larger than other models so it is a bit heavier, but shouldn’t be too difficult to lift.

1500 Watts

Typically, a toaster oven ranges between 1200 watts and 1800 watts. The higher the wattage, the quicker the toaster oven will heat up. This model is right in the middle and will preheat and cook food a lot faster than lower-end models at with 1200 watts.

To put this in the perspective of money, it typically costs 12 cents per 1000 watts per hour of usage. As lower watts will take longer to preheat, you may end up using more energy and more money compared to models with higher watts. Costs may be reduced by a product’s efficiency.

– One-touch cooking functions: bake, broil, and toast
– Bagel, pizza, frozen snacks, potatoes, and cookie options
– Convection cooking
– Dual-position rack slots
– Extra-deep curved interior for 12” pizza
– 120-minute timer
– Non-stick interior surface
– 1500 Watts

Two-year warranty

Most toaster ovens only come with a one-year warranty, so this is a nice, lengthy warranty. If you experience any problems with your unit in these two years, you can contact Black + Decker to fix or replace the unit. However, as it common across all makes and models, you may have to pay shipping to the manufacturer to have your unit fixed.

Accessories and Cookware

Included Accessories
The Black + Decker CTO6335S comes with a removable crumb tray, bake pan, and a rack.

Additional Accessories
If you plan on using your toaster oven to bake, I recommend buying a cake tin and muffin tin. And, to make cleaning your oven even quicker, try purchasing a non-stick reusable toaster oven liner. This will protect your crumb tray against grease and other hard-to-remove food substances.

BLACK+DECKER CTO6335S Consumer Rating

For the most part, consumers like this toaster oven because of its easy-to-use cooking functions, its size, and its ability to cook food evenly. Users find opening the door awkward, are displeased that the wording above the one-touch buttons wore off easily, and dislike how hot the oven gets while in use. Despite these reviews, they still believe it’s a worthwhile investment.

BLACK+DECKER CTO6335S Price Summary

There are lots of toaster ovens available at a similar price to the Black + Decker CTO6335S. However, you may find yourself compromising on the easy-to-use, one-touch function buttons. Other models of a similar price have dials instead of buttons, so in this instance, it is entirely up to preference.

Many consumers prefer to use this toaster oven in place of their microwave to simply heat up food, so you may find it’s a product you’ll use every day.

This toaster oven is ideal for students, couples, and small families. The interior isn’t large enough to cook a whole meal for a large family, but it could be used to heat up the sides or bake desserts while your main meal is cooked in your regular kitchen oven.

Black + Decker also offers a three-rack position model at a slightly higher price. The three-rack model is a little taller and you can read of review of it here.
