Breville BOV450XL Mini Smart Oven Review

Breville BOV450XL Mini Smart Oven with Element IQ

The Breville BOV450XL Mini Smart Oven is so much better for reheating leftovers compared to a microwave – find out why in our review below.

Although this toaster oven is smaller than other models, it’s just as powerful. From bread and bagels to pizza and potatoes – you can roast, toast, bake, and broil a whole range of foods in this compact unit.

Due to its smaller dimensions, it’s ideal for buyers who have less counter space. Using Element IQ technology, this product intelligently delivers the ideal amount of heat for each of its toaster settings. Whether you’re baking or broiling, this toaster oven heats up fast! To learn about its features in detail, continue reading our comprehensive review.

Does the Breville BOV450XL have a convection feature?

There is no convection feature available with this toaster oven. Convection features are usually necessary to speed up the cooking/baking process while ensuring an even bake. This model does not feature one, but as the interior is so small, it will still heat up quickly and speed up the cooking/baking process.

If you’re hoping to do a lot of baking, it may be a better idea to invest in a toaster oven with a baking feature. This will help make sure the insides are cooked to perfection.

Toaster Functions

8 cooking functions:
– Bagel
– Toast
– Bake
– Broil
– Pizza
– Roast
– Cookies
– Reheat

With multiple toaster functions, this smaller toaster oven model offers a great amount of cooking versatility. Toasting, roasting, baking, and broiling – you can do so much in this compact model.

Plus, as Breville understands that every person has their own unique preferences, each setting is customizable! For example, after selecting the ‘Toast’ option, you then input how many slices you are toasting, if the bread is frozen, and then you turn the dial to select the ideal ‘darkness’ for your toast. All of these features help to make sure your food is cooked just the way you like it!

Additional Settings
With the frozen foods button available, it will add the vital extra minutes to ensure your food is cooked thoroughly. Not only that, the ‘A Bit More’ button will add a little extra time if your food is coming to the end of its cooking cycle but you don’t think it’s quite ready yet. For example, if you’re using the ‘Toast’ cycle, it will add on 30 seconds; during the ‘Roast’ cycle, it will add 10 more minutes.

As the toaster functions have pre-set times and temperatures, they may not be ideal for every dish you want to make. For this reason, you can change both the set time and temperature to suit your unique requirements. You can even change the temperature measurement from Fahrenheit to Celsius – it’s your choice.

Plus, your preferences for each setting will be saved so you don’t have to keep resetting the time/temperature/measurement. If you’d like to reset this and go back to the factory’s original settings, simply switch off the unit, unplug, and when you plug it back in, the settings will go back to normal.

Due to the unit being built in smaller dimensions, the interior is very compact. This means it will take less time to heat up, and your food will most likely be cooked/baked/broiled at a faster pace. As a result, it’s important to adjust your cooking times accordingly.

You may find you have to experiment with the settings to get your food cooked the way you like it. However, once you have got a hang of this, you’ll find that your food is cooked evenly and quickly.

LCD Screen
A great safety feature is the LCD screen. When the unit is on but not in use, the screen will appear blue. But when a cycle is on, it illuminates orange. This is great, as it will inform you if a function has been selected accidentally. It will also indicate when it is preheating and sound an alarm when it has finished preheating. Finally, when the cooking cycle finishes, it will sound an alarm three times – making sure you always know when your food is ready.

Safety Functions
Another great safety function is that the oven will switch itself if left on for too long. For example, the ‘Toast’ function is set to a maximum of 10 minutes of continuous cooking. Once 10 minutes has been reached, it will automatically turn off. The maximum time changes according to which cooking function you are using.

Breville BOV450XL Temperature Range

The lowest temperature on this model is 120° F and the highest is 500° F.

Because it has such a small interior, it gets hot very, very quickly. Pretty much all toaster ovens get very hot on the outside, and this one is no different. In fact, I am yet to come across one that doesn’t have a hot exterior while in use. This is why it’s important to use protective wear when you touch it and it is in use.

This Breville model uses 4 quartz elements with Element IQ technology to heat up. Quartz elements heat up a lot quicker than alternative materials, such as metal rods and glass tubes.

What is Element IQ technology?
Element IQ transfers heat across 4 quartz elements. This delivers precise heat where and when you want it. Different elements will heat according to which toaster function is being used for the best cooking results!

Watts

1800 watts

Due to 1800 watts being a fairly big amount of electricity, Breville recommends that you use a dedicated outlet for this oven. This is because if you use an outlet that is on the same circuit as your refrigerator or microwave, for example, then your breaker may get tripped.

Is it easy to clean?

Toaster ovens will need to be cleaned a lot more than your regular oven, which is why it’s important to choose one that’s quick and easy to clean.

With a non-stick coating on the inside of this toaster oven, it’s incredibly easy to clean. Plus, it also comes with a pull-out crumb tray to make the process even easier.

The manual clearly states not to use abrasive cleaners and metal scouring pads when cleaning the unit. Instead, use a soft sponge or cloth to wipe away any dirt when the machine is unplugged.

Dimensions

External dimensions: 15.5” (L) x 14” (W) x 8.75” (H)
Internal dimensions: 11” (L) x 10” (W) x 4” (H)

It’s also important to take into consideration how hot this unit gets while in use. This means you need at least 4-inches between this toaster oven and any other appliances in the kitchen. This will allow adequate air circulation and prevent wall discoloration as a result of radiated heat.

What can I cook in the Breville BOV450XL?

A great variety of food can be cooked in this product, including toast, bagels, English muffins, pizza, brownies, cookies, vegetables, and so much more!

In terms of capacity, it fits:
– 4 slices of toast
– 11” pizza
– 4 bagel halves
– 10” x 10” baking dish
– 1 whole chicken that is cut in half

Design

Its backlit, easy-to-read LCD display shows the time and temperature for each toaster function. It also illuminates orange while it preheats and is cooking, then turns blue once the cycle is finished. This tells users very clearly when to put food in and when to take it out.

Racks
There are three rack positions in this toaster oven, making it easier to cook a variety of meals. I prefer using the bottom rack for baking, reheating, and roasting; the middle rack for toast, cookies, and pizza; and the top rack for broiling. The three rack positions really make cooking in this toaster oven a lot easier and more versatile.

A design flaw I have found is that there is no auto-eject rack. This is a common feature across all makes and models of toaster ovens. It’s an ideal feature to have as it reduces the risk of burning yourself because you don’t have to reach all the way into the oven when removing food.

There is also no stopping mechanism on the wire racks. This means that you have to be careful not to pull the entire rack out when removing food. It can also result in the rack falling out and burning the user.

Function Dial
The labels on the function dial are quite small. So, if you have bad eyesight like myself, you will have to put your glasses on to ensure you select the correct toaster function.

Plug and Cord
Many users report that they don’t like the three-prong grounded plug which is supplied as they think it is too big. The reason it is bigger than usual is because it is made with a finger ring that allows you to pull the plug out of the wall without damaging it.

Although there are some users who have found a way around using the plug supplied, it’s important to use the plug and cord provided, as it is made this way for safety.

Warranty

One year limited warranty

In general, Breville is very good at responding to any issues or complaints, as well as providing repairs and replacements. Even if you experience an issue outside of warranty, you’ll often find that Breville is happy to help. However, you may have to pay a shipping fee to send your toaster oven back to them for inspection and repairs.

Accessories

Included Accessories

This model doesn’t come with as many accessories as Breville’s other toaster ovens, so you may want to invest in the following:

Pros and Cons

Pros

Overall Consumer Rating

From the reviews I’ve read, people are really pleased with this toaster oven. It heats up quickly, cooks food evenly, and has a great variety of toaster functions. Buyers love how easy this product is to use on a daily basis.

Although it doesn’t have all the features of Breville’s other toaster oven models, it still offers a lot of cooking versatility.

Breville BOV450XL Mini Smart Oven Price

In terms of pricing, I would say this toaster oven falls into the middle of the market. Of the three Breville toaster ovens that use Element IQ technology, this is the least expensive.

As you would expect from Breville, it’s made to a very high standard and is ideal for couples or people who live on their own. It’s super easy to reheat leftovers or make a simple meal for one, so you don’t have to wait a long time for your conventional oven to heat up.

If you have a gluten intolerance like me, I like to use my toaster oven for my gluten-free bread and pizza. This means everyone else in the house can use the toaster for their regular bagels, and the oven to cook their regular pizzas.

This toaster oven is perfect for people who want to make small meals quickly. You can even use this model to heat up your sides while you cook your main meal in your big kitchen oven. It may not be ideal for those who want to do lots of baking (because there is no convection feature), but with 8 toaster functions, there is so much you can cook in it to perfection!
