Homemade biscuits, chicken, and brats (the sausage, not kids)… cookies, brownies, and casseroles have all been made in this spacious toaster oven. It may be a little bigger than your average microwave, but its additional Bamboo Cutting Board accessory will help you save space on the counter.
If you hate having to wait for your kitchen oven to heat up – maybe you’re fed up with the whole kitchen getting warmer each time you use your oven – investing in the Breville BOV800XL will save you hours slaving away in the kitchen… and we’ll tell you how in our comprehensive review below.
In comparison to other models on the market, the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven is significantly larger and has an impressive 10 smart cooking functions – Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Grill, Pizza, Cookies, Reheat, Warm and Slow Cook. Plus, it even comes with a handy 13-inch pizza pan!
This Breville toaster oven has been created with Element iQ for the perfect bake, whatever you’re making… but we’ll tell you more about Element iQ and what it is later on in our review.
Does the Breville BOV800XL have a convection feature?
In short, yes! The Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven Pro does have a convection feature that helps bake your cookies, cakes, and pizza to perfection – and most users find that although the convection fan makes a little sound, it mostly goes unnoticed.
For those of you who aren’t sure what convection baking is and why it’s a great feature to have, I’ll explain… Convection baking offers greater flexibility when using your toaster oven, meaning your food will have crispier crusts and softer insides. Convection fans circulate hot air throughout the oven for a more even bake and can reduce the cooking time between 20 and 30%, so it’s important to adjust your cooking times accordingly when in use.
Unlike lower-end toaster ovens, the Breville BOV800XL has plenty of cooking functions, including Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies, Reheat, Warm and Slow Cook. All of these functions come with preset recommended settings except for Slow Cook – all can be customized to your own unique cooking requirements.
The preset functions are put in place to help users if they are unsure of how to cook their food, but are easily changeable if the temperature or time is not ideal for your taste or bake. Once you have customized a function to your preferred time/temperature, this toaster oven will keep it as default until the toaster oven is unplugged. It will then reset to its previous settings.
Cooking from frozen food often takes longer, so to make sure your food is cooked to perfection, there is a Frozen Foods button. Simply press this button and a snowflake will appear on the screen. This means it will automatically add the time needed to cook your food thoroughly.
The Breville BOV800XL’s temperature ranges between 120 and 500 degrees Fahrenheit and uses 1,800 watts while in use.
Breville created the BOV800XL model with cooking diversity in mind, enabling users to cook different foods through a variety of methods and create delicious dishes for all appetites. For example, baked goods need to be cooked evenly, while meats need to be seared on top – the Breville BOV800XL accommodates this. As most toaster ovens fail to distribute heat correctly, the food can end up cooked in one area and not in another – this is how the Breville BOV800XL stands out.
What is Element iQ and how does it work?
Element iQ technology transfers heat across five quartz elements to deliver precise, stable heat exactly where you want it, when you want it. It’s a sophisticated heating system enabling more efficient cooking. Plus, if you’re cooking more than one dish, Element iQ will automatically adjust the cooking time according to the heat already in the oven, so there’s less chance of your food burning.
Is the Breville BOV800XL easy to clean?
As the Breville BOV800XL has an interior coated with a non-stick material that can safely withstand high temperatures, it is incredibly easy to clean. Not only that, unlike other toaster ovens, it is also fitted with a removable crumb/drip tray that is accessible from the front of the oven, enabling quicker, more effective cleaning.
The manufacturer’s manual clearly states how to safely clean this oven, saying that metal scouring pads and abrasive cleaners should NOT be used when cleaning as this will remove the non-stick coating. Instead, use a soft, damp cloth to gently remove any food, but only when the oven has completely cooled down and is unplugged from the socket.
Exterior: (W) 18.5 x (D) 16.2 x (H) 11.2 inches
Interior: (W) 12 x (D) 14 x (H) 7.5 inches
The below will fit into this toaster oven:
– 1⁄4” sheet tray
– 1⁄4” sheet-sized accessories with no handles
– 13” x 9” baking tins with no handles
– 6 cup muffin pan
– 9” pie pan
As with most toaster ovens, the exterior of the oven gets very, very hot while the product is in use, which is why it’s important to ensure there is a minimum of 4 inches (10cm) of space on all sides. This will help protect walls or other appliances in your kitchen from the toaster oven’s heat, so it’s important to take these extra inches into account before buying your toaster oven.
How much food can I cook in the Breville BOV800XL?
If you’re a pizza lover, thankfully, the Breville BOV800XL has been created with you in mind. This toaster oven will fit:
– A 13″ pizza
– 6 bagel halves
– 6 slices of toast
– 2 open-faced sandwiches
– 1 whole chicken
– A 13″ x 11″ baking pan (included)
Breville housed the BOV800XL in reinforced stainless steel. Stainless steel repels fingerprints and smudges and is easily cleaned with a damp cloth and a touch of soap, so you won’t have to work hard to keep your unit free of marks and dirt.
The heating elements are made out of quartz, as quartz responds quicker to heat change and results in more even heating throughout the oven. Plus, the interior is coated with a non-stick material to make cleanup easier.
This toaster oven has been designed with dials instead of buttons for ease-of-use and three rack positions. Through the use of magnets in the design, the middle rack auto-ejects when the oven door is opened – making it a whole lot easier to remove your cookies, tater tots or pies from the oven without burning yourself.
Breville’s BOV800XL is available with a one-year limited product warranty.
Most buyers have found that their toaster oven works perfectly fine within that first year and beyond. However, not long after the one year warranty runs out, some have experienced problems. There is the option to buy an extended warranty, which is recommended by many buyers, ensuring a replacement/repairs are provided should the toaster oven stop working after the first year of use.

– Three rack positions
– 13” pizza/6-slice toast capacity

As the top of the toaster oven can become very hot during use, Breville’s Bamboo Cutting Board is designed to sit on top of the oven – reducing heat emitted and enabling users to store kitchen items on top of the toaster oven, without worrying about heat from below. Plus, it can also be used as a tray to transfer meals from the toaster oven to the table.
Important note: The manual states to use caution when using pans and dishes made out of materials other than metal. If you are using ceramic or glass pans, make sure they are ovenproof to prevent cracking.
Pros and Cons

– Lots of interior room (extra space for pizza)

– Reheats meals better than a microwave
– Keep warm mode
– Pull-out crumb tray makes cleaning quick and easy
– Purchasing an extended warranty may be required because of poor durability
– No interior light
The Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven fits into the higher end of the toaster oven market. Although it is pricier than others, it also has a lot of features other toaster ovens do not offer – e.g. iQ Element, a convection fan, an auto-eject rack.
Many users are incredibly happy with their purchase of this oven and choose to use this toaster oven over their usual kitchen stove. Although many have used the Breville BOV800XL for years and never had an issue, some have found they experience problems one year after purchasing – just after their warranty ends. This was a consistent complaint by consumers, but those who invested in the extended warranty remained content with their purchase.
Ultimately, if you don’t mind purchasing an extended warranty as an addition to this toaster oven, I believe you will have a very pleasant experience.
Is the Breville BOV800XL worth the price?
As previously mentioned, the Breville BOV800XL is more on the pricey side, however, it comes with a whole host of features you may struggle to find with cheaper models. Its downfall is in its durability, prompting consumers to purchase an extended warranty to safeguard against the toaster oven breaking down after spending a good amount of money on it. The length of time owners have used this oven before it breaks varies greatly – some reviews say 1 year, others say 3 years and some people have found it to work an incredible 8 years.
If you’re simply looking for a toaster oven that cooks pizza and toast, this toaster oven may be too expensive for your needs. It’s ideal for those who want to cook a large variety of dishes without having to wait for their big oven to heat up.
Limited mobility is also a reason why some consumers have invested in this toaster oven. If you have a bad back and don’t want to bend down when removing food from the oven, this toaster oven is ideal. It can easily be stored on the counter where bending is not required – and, as previously mentioned, a great variety of dishes can be cooked to perfection in it, so you won’t be missing your bigger oven.
Despite the Breville BOV800XL’s durability being called into question, many have purchased another one after their last BOV800XL died – showing just how much people love this toaster oven’s wide range of features.
